Winter football is the town's main code and it runs roughly March to August, with cricket taking the same ovals from September through February. Both dates come from the competition, not from whichever ground is available that year.

Morisset Showground on Ourimbah Street, now managed by Lake Macquarie City Council after a NSW Crown Lands request, is in the middle of a substantial makeover, with plans to upgrade Neville Frost Oval, add spectator seating and put an event lawn either side of a new central showground building. Separately, the NSW Office of Sport is working on a potential transfer of land within the grounds of Morisset Hospital for a purpose-built sports and recreation facility with indoor multi-sport facilities and an outdoor oval and courts.
