The Springfield Central Sports Complex on Sportstar Drive adds eight tennis courts, four multi-purpose fields, two clubhouses and cricket cages, with six local clubs based there, and Greater Springfield carries more than 50 hectares of open space across fifteen neighbourhood parks. Spring Mountain State School opened here in 2019. Court sport is unusually well provided for, and all of it is outdoors.
An indoor court club plays under even lighting where almost any colour combination reads clearly. Out here the same side plays in direct Queensland sun, on hard courts with very little shade, and glare does things to colour that a mock-up on a screen will not show you. Higher contrast between the number and the fabric does more work than a subtle palette, and it is worth telling us the gear is for outdoor courts before we start drawing rather than after the first fixture.
Two of the courts at Silver Jubilee Park are marked for both netball and basketball, which is a small planning decision with a real effect: clubs here often field sides in both codes, run by the same volunteers, on the same surface, in the same week. That makes a single design family the practical shape of an order, with a reversible for one code and a dress for the other coming off one set of colours, one crest and one approval rather than two.
A club playing outdoors year round spends more time standing on hot asphalt than an indoor club spends in a stadium. Team caps and lighter training and warm-up layers get worn constantly here, so they belong in the first order rather than as a follow-up, and putting them on the same artwork means the whole side matches on the sideline as well as on the court.
Outdoor court competition runs through the year rather than in the indoor blocks other clubs work to, while the field codes on the same park follow the usual pattern of winter roughly March to September and cricket through the summer. Having designers in house is what lets a court club test the outdoor question properly. A committee can ask for two versions, one bolder and one closer to the colours it has always used, see both drawn, and choose knowing how each will behave in bright light rather than discovering it in round one.
It should change the contrast. In bright sun a number needs a stronger difference from the fabric behind it than it does under indoor lighting, and fine detail disappears at distance.
